REPORTS
In a bid to raise public awareness
of the activities of the Porgera mining operation and deepen the
understanding of its role in the surrounding community and environment,
various studies and research projects were commissioned. Reports
published include:
- Porgera Mine Sustainability Report
In August 1999 the Porgera Mine produced its first sustainability
report (for the 1998 year), and has produced one annually
since then. This report addresses the social, environmental
and economic performance of the operation and highlights
the PJV's management plans and systems for sustainability.

- CSIRO Review
The independent review headed by CSIRO was
commissioned by the PJV to determine downstream impacts of
the mining operation and to answer concerns that had been raised
about the impacts on the local people and the environment.
The review process spanned several months and involved site
visits to Porgera and the communities downstream of the mine.
The review team determined health and environmental impacts
along with the adequacy of operational practices.
- PJV's response
to the CSIRO Review
The CSIRO Review team made 48 recommendations to the PJV regarding
environmental management. The PJV's approach to meeting these
requirements is available here. You will need Acrobat Reader

Porgera’s
Impact on Rivers
A
six page brochure on Porgera's impact on rivers and local
communities. The document summarises the issues associated
with the mine and discusses the CSIRO review
and its findings. It also outlines steps the PJV is taking
