WELCOME

Welcome to the Porgera Environmental Advisory Komiti's (from here on known as PEAK) website.

PEAK is an independent association which aims for long-term sustainable development and environmental stability in the surrounding communities and environs to be by-products of the activities of the Porgera Gold Mine in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. In  addition, the aim is to ensure that these activities are consistent with international best practice in social, economic and environmental terms.

By providing independent advisory, information and review services, PEAK's activites add value, and complements the interests of the surrounding community, the Porgera Joitn Venture (PJV) management and shareholders, and other stakeholders.

PEAK'S ACTIVITIES:

PEAK was established in 1997 in response to community concerns over the environmental impact of the Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) gold mine, with the aim of improving PJV’s transparency, and creating accountability for its environmental performance.

PEAK’s initial activities concentrated on the recommendations of the CSIRO review of PJV’s environmental impacts, ensuring that external stakeholder views on these issues were heard and adequately        addressed by PJV.

PEAK’s activities were expanded in 2003, to incorporate the key social and economic issues that will effect the Porgera Valley and surrounding areas following the eventual mine closure.

PEAK continues to focus its activities on waste discharge, tailings disposal, sediment behavior in the river system, the social issues surrounding mine closure, the long term sustainability of relocated    communities, community health and education, law and order and capacity building.
